One of the keys to my SAR/Schutzhund/Family dog is the time I spent in selecting him as a pup. He has to be social with everyone, even though that doesn't mean he has to act like a golden Retriever with them. Bite like an alligator on the helper (sleeve) and still let my grandkids climb all over him. I'm also retired and he's with me damn near all day every day. Lots of work for some people. I wouldn't have it any other way. I also don't expect him to be a true protection dog.
Can I please KISS this issue. It is a YES and NO answer. Can a Schutzhund dog can live in your household as a member of the family... YES if he gets "everything" from you, the handler... NO if you are competing for his attentions with spouse or children. They have to just "be there". They become part of the household he protects.. you become "everything" to the dog.
Hi Marsha,
Very well put!! I have been the one to do everything for him, feeding , exercising, grooming, and all of the training. So although he is quite sociable with everyone else in the house, including our company, it is me he looks to for the chance to do another round of work. This was easy to accomplish in our house since there was no other competition for responsiblity to do it every time , everyday <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
For those who want photo proof of this have a look at http://www.kraftwerkk9.com/index.php to see Rabauke, an international competition dog around the family's toddler.
Those dogs that are bred with balanced drives and solid tempermant know how to turn it on when it's time to work and turn it off when around the family and off the field.
