I know that several of you have experience with Malinois so hope you'll chip in! I have some pups that are actually Dutch Shepherds (though some look like Malinois)but they all act more like a Mal than a German Shepherd. At 2 1/2 months, I already see a lot of differences btwn these guys and the German Shepherds, that I am more familar with. They are GREAT pups, over the top drive and nerves but they are more 'A.D.D.', more aggressive in expressing themselves and their self confidence seems to show up in a F*** you attitude- even at their young age! GSD pups seem more 'eager to please' where these guys are more interested in 'what's in it for me?!'I also notice that they are more ready to bite when taken away from something they want. Do these traits seem familiar to anyone? What methods of training have you found most helpful? Do they mature at a different rate than GSD's?(in general)Any tips appreciated! They have so much potential Iwant to avoid as many mistakes as I can.Thanks.
Cindy,
It sounds like you have a typical Mal litter or Malagators as they are more reffered to from those of us that are stupid enough to go outside in open toed shoes. The most important thing with the pups (and not all of us will agree) is to get them doing something and chewing on something now. I put little Jutes tied to the kennel fence so they can pull and chew on then and when I have them out I put a piece of jute on a string and useit as a teaser for them all the time building their prey drive up. I have little baby kongs for them to chew on and chase around. The most important thing is to keep there little minds working, if you don't then they will find something to do and you most likely will not like it.
to me the Dutchie seems to be more reserved then a mal pup. They like to check things out before they jump in a mal pup will jump inhead first and then have to figure out how to get itself out of what ever they just got in to.
When people get scared they call the police..When the police get scared they call K-9!
Thanks, Matt. I love 'maligators'! Yes, these puppies do need to keep busy and they are very athletic. We are having a good time but just want to keep them challenged without pushing them too fast. I have one little female that will crawl up the wire of her pen like a cat til she is three feet off the ground and just hang there! Unbelievable!
I tell you what send me the little climber and in 12 years free of charge I will send you back what I found worked out.LOL Seriously though if you can go to fd-malinois.com (?) Brigita has a long list of things they expose thier puppies to. I am not computer literate so maybe if that is the wrong address someone can straighten it out for me
