hello, I am new to this board. And to let ya'll know a lil about me. i'm 19 and live in the chesterfield Va. area. I plan on going to school in Sanford NC at Tarheel Acadamy. To get certified to train dogs in S&R, Narcotics. Schutzhund, obediance and Agility and every other area there is. I've always loved working w/ GSD's and am now getting into Belgian malinois. I have a 6 mth old B.M. That i've had for almost 2 mths. And in that time i've trained her to Sit, Stay, Down, heel and long stay and she also does alot of agility (everything except the weave poles and the tire jumps.(all in german) i haven't had much time with her so it is taking me awhile to train her. She is a ball of engery and has a huge prey drive. My question is do teh PD's only buy dogs from certified trainers? And another is how old does a dog have to be to start with the schutzhund training.? and advice would be greatly appreciated also.
PD's normally buy from vendors who offer solid guarantees and who have a good track record. Police K9 involves matching the personalities and abilities of a dog with those of a handler. Most Departments can't afford to take the hit for a mismatch. If the dog is qualified and there is an absence of risk, you have a good chance at placement if you are competitive.
Schutzhund training begins at birth. Think of SchH training as developing through stages such as imprinting, Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade Scool etc.
Opportunity always looks better going than coming.
