OK, skip the GSD growth chart. My boys 6 mos, sixty lbs and already 24". Yes, he's 24". I measured three times. He's no where near finished growing. His dam was like a deer. Should I take him off the puppy food?
As I understand it, large breed formula puppy food is designed to keep large breed dogs from growing too fast, not the opposite. This is because the large breeds tend to grow so fast that they can develop joint and bone problems (most temporary) just from srouting so quickly. I would talk to a vet or someone who is smarter than me on this subject, but if you are feeding large breed food it should be (theoretically) managing growth speed, not accelerating it.
What Jeff said is true. Large breed puppy food is supposed to help slow down the weight gain/growth in large breed pups but sometimes that still isn't helping. That's why you would switch to adult dog food early. To keep him at the thin, lean weight to prevent damaging his joints, adult food may be your only choice if he's growing and gaining too fast on the lg. breed pup food.
I had to do that to my gsd when he was about 5 mo. old and sent to the vet with swollen front legs, hot joints and refusing to get up from the pain. My vet said I needed to feed him adult lg. breed, feed less and no exercise if he is sore, hot or swollen. He wanted my dogs ribs to show and the part of the spine near the pelvis -just to be on the safe side. People would always comment on how skinny he was and ask, "don't you feed your dog?!" but it helped alot and my dog had just as much energy and health as before. He just wasn't in pain.
When your dog is older you might want to offer children's riding lessons! Yee Haw! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

No 6 month old puppy should ever be on puppy food. This has been standard operating prceeedure for years. They should comeoff puppy foor at 4 to 4 1/2 months.
Slow his growth down and feed an all-natural diet. Use the archives of this board or read what I have written on my web site.
