I'm convinced and in my heart of hearts believe that Pit was released on purpose. I don't have any proof but I do hope they find the owner. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> The handler showed more restraint then I would of used. http://www.local6.com/news/4502956/detail.html
This is one of the new teams I just certified a few months ago. The handler is very attentive and with time is going to be very good. The dog (Victor) is very social and not animal aggressive. He will be very good as well once he gets some real street smarts. Victor is already excellent in drugs and tracking. My fear is that this incident will make Victor become dog aggressive. I have seen this happen before. The next few weeks will tell, then we will have to fix it.
This area of Melbourne is infested with fighting dogs. The local residents make no bones about openly threatening our dogs with their fighting dogs. Although I wasn't working that night, I feel the same as you. I truly believe that dog was sent from the shadows by one of our local scumbags. If this is the case, word will be on the street soon and we will deal with it then.
I saw ofc. Greg Hughes today and he assures me Vitor is doing fine.
Interesting that it happened inside the car kennel, I wonder what impact that aspect of the attack will have on the dog’s psyche.
At least the news article didn’t make the officers or handler look like the bad guys in the incident. We had one here not too long ago where a city officer was working a track and his dog was attacked by a loose pit. The officer shot the pit in this incident as well which prompted a whole bunch of controversy as to weather the officer’s actions were justified.
Can you guys co ordinate with your animal control guys? maybe that will give you a better idea who the knuckleheads are with the inbred pits. I think this was done in Miami with some success. In the county I live in the animal control guys are police officers with full arrest authority. And I think they all use the same coffee pot when they start thier shift.
Our animal control guys are well aware of who most of the players are. Obviously they get stonewalled when doing their investigations down there. All you gotta do is tweak the right scumbag and he will sing. Sooner or later we will find out if this was intentional.
Among the usual animal control violations, it will be a felony charge of injuring a police service animal. Beleive it or not..charging him with felony animal cruelty more than likely get a stiffer penalty. Go figure.
