I have heard from officers in larger agencies that a degree in accounting or business is helpful as police organizations are becoming more business like in the way they are run. This is assuming management is a goal.
I am working towards a BS in Criminal Justice (Criminal Science) with a minor in Sociology. This particular minor gives me a teaching licensure option should I want to pursue that in the future.
I think it would depend greatly on the particular agency and the hiring standards set by the chief, mayor, city council, etc.
My Dept. has approx. 450 sworn with 7 K9 handlers. Pretty tough odds for someone hell bent on K9. One of my toughest responsibilities has been handler selection because there are so many who want the position and so many who would do a great job.
I require 3 years of police service with an exceptional history. After that, any legitimate K9 experience carries a lot of weight. Anyone with experience, however, can drop themselves from consideration very quickly due to sustained excessive force, attitude, etc.
Max, go with English!!! I did Criminal Justice and Business. I'm trying to convince my HS grad son to major in English because there are so many opportunities in LE for officers who have writing skills.
Opportunity always looks better going than coming.

Hey:
Not to rain on anyones parade. If you are thinking about getting into the law enforcement field, good for you. However, you should want to get into this field because you want to help people, not because you want to work a dog.
Realistically speaking, if you work in a large metropolitan city, it is going to take you at least a year to grasp the basics of beat knowledge.
Maintaining proficiency, getting off of probation (18 months - 2 years) and most of all, gaining experience and maintaining good officer safety skills and tactics. Five years is about right to start looking at other options rather than patrol. But you still need that "base" of knowledge before you will be an effective handler.
Just my $.02

PS: Almost any college degree besides (CJ or AJ) will do. I would say try and learn spanish. That will really be a feather in your cap.
