Why is it that in ring sport the Malinois dominates and there are so few GSDs? Is it because the Malinois is a more agile dog or is it more to it than that? There are more Malinois competing in Mondio, KNPV and Belgium Ring.I'm not sure about French ring. I've heard that Schutzhund was created to test the German Shepherd. Is it that ring sport is to test the Malinois? Then why so many different forms of ring sport?
It definately is the dog bred for the sport. There are variations on a theme but, mals were bred for it. Shutzhund is the test for shepherds, but they made it a sport anyway. We have shepherds in our Mondio club, and other than my dog they are doing quite well. I think that, looking at previous posts, people have a hard time finding shutzhund clubs and would have an even harder time finding a ringsport club. I believe there are only 6 mondio clubs here in the states. I think that here in the states it is a matter of logistics most of the time.
I saw a shepherd owned by Ludwig Turbane (probably miss-spelled sorry) I think it was the 2002 decoy selection and that dog was really nice. I honestly don't see why a good shepherd wouldn't do well.
Well, the GSD as a breed was developed before SchH was developed as a sport, needless to say.
In theory, SchH should shape the GSD, as it was designed to be a breeding suitability test for that breed. But it's been so compromised now by the showlines breeders and the AKC ( the worst thing that can happen to a breed short of thermonuclear war <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> ) that it's impact is negligble.
Actually, one of my pups has been bought by a Ring Sport competitor in Mexico who wants to try a GSD in Ring Sport.
It'll be interesting to see how the dog does in the future..
From what I've been told, the FRing decoys in Mexico are very hard and physical with the dogs, so there could be some nice advantages in having a nice sized, physical GSD to match up to them.
My thinking is that if the best GSD's (and the best trainers) were doing Ringsport, that they would do very well (Iorko De La Legende De Chantevent was a very nice dog), but the demand just isn't there at this point.
The only reason GSD's aren't active in ringsports is that they aren't up to it. As Ring being the hardest dogsport only the best of the best breed succeed. It takes 3 years of training to get a BR dog ready. And even then only 1 out of 20 succeed the rest are sold to army and police. So why take the chance with a "lesser" breed if with the best you only have a 5% chance to get to compitition?
