Hello,
I'm wondering how others control ticks?? Aside from topicals, Frontline etc. Has anyone experienced a tick problem inside the house?? I just saw a tick, engorged crawling on my floor!!! I applied Frontline to my dog just yesterday. My dog was also just hanging in my yard this morning, I went out to brush her and saw a brown tick crawling on her front leg. I just finished "shop vacing" my house top to bottom, washed bedding etc. I'm kinda freaked thinking I have ticks in my HOUSE!!! Now I'm all itchy too, (Ah, the power of suggestion)
Any advice or suggestions?? I love running my dog in a nearby park, and she loves sniffing around, now I'm wondering if I should just stick to the paved trails.
I live in NJ and its been a really wet spring.
Linda.... Growing up in Monmouth County NJ I remember fondly watching my father pull an average of 30 or more ticks off his Sheltie each summer....even with a tick collar. It became such a fascination to my dad that he kept each year's harvest in an alcohol filled jar to measure each year's booty. There are a bunch of lawn treatment available but I'm don't think I would want to expose my dogs to that. I like using the Frontline Plus on my work dog...he's in the woods all year and we have yet to get any ticks in the house.
Officer Grubb,
Your sound advice was appreciated. Yes, I really don't want to expose myself or my dog to pesticides in the yard. Thats why, I unfortunately was reluctant to apply the Frontline. I did however, apply it to my dog, and will continue to do so through the summer. Fleas have not been an issue. If I might ask, do you use Frontline year round or just spring thru fall?
I used to drag in hundreds of ticks from the sand at the beach and hills in CA and they literally infested my small apartment in weeks! Yuck! The vet said they breed in the carpet and crawl up the walls to find places to attach themselves on to animals. It was the grossest thing! If I were you, I would immediatley go get the Adams brand flea and tick Carpet Powder for your house and kill whatever has gotten inside before they breed and invade!
They best thing I found to work on my dog to kill the ticks was a tick collar called "Preventick". At the time I was using Advantix which was supposed to kill both fleas and ticks but it wasn't enough. Actually, I don't think Frontline kills ticks- only fleas(???) Better check on that.
I'm getting all itchy just thinking about it, you're right!

Preventick is still around but the frontline has worked fine for me.
We are in an area with plenty of ticks and i am in the woods a lot. I always find 2 or 3 on me when i go out, but rarely find one on on the dogs. I believe the frontline paralyzes their mouth parts. Of course, having lived most of my life in the south, tick checks are just a way of life in the summer!
i use the frontline plus instead of the regular frontline but think that the difference is for fleas with a growth regulator.
I use Frontline plus on my dogs. The two terriers aren't in the woods much anymore, so they get it once every two months. My SAR dog is in the woods all the time. He gets it once a month. I spent all day in the woods a few days back. I got covered with ticks and chiggers. Thunder got nothing. The occasional tick I find imbedded in him is always dead. They bite, they die.
