Hello there, does anyone know of a good discussion forum centered around sheepherding that is akin to Leerburg's? I live in a geographically isolated area and have no ready access to a good schutzhund club but could realistically head up a sheepherding club and thus keep me and my 4 month old Kirschental bitch from dying of boredom (I'm sick of doing CKC obedience, I want a challenge!). Any thoughts and/or advice is truly appreciated up here in the wilds of B.C. Canada!

As someone who is going to be competing in CKC obedience against your girl in the future, might I just take a moment to ROFL!!!!!
Unfortunately I don't know any forums strictly for GSDs and sheepherding, but there are a couple of websites/contacts you could try. One is german-shepherdherding.com, I don't know the owner of the site (just sort of stumbled across it) but it's interesting reading. The other is Lynn Leach. I DO know her, and while she doesn't focus totally on GSDs (she raises Border Collies and ACDs) she is an accomplished all-breed trainer. Might be worth a try. I'll give ya my personal take after Nero's been out to scare the living hell out of her sheep a few times
You could try checking out http://www.janwesen.com
She is a herding trainer, she owns Australian Kelpies and Australian Shepherds and she travels around the U.S., Canada, and Europe offering herding clinics and classes. She competes in ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America), AKC, and CKC herding I belive. (Not sure about CKC). She also lives in the Seattle area, so it's not so far from B.C. Canada. She has trained many dogs up to their Champion titles in herding from ducks, to sheep to cattle. So if nothing else she would probably be a great source of information on where you could go, how you can start, etc.
Good luck
There are two groups in Yahoo groups. One is GSDherding (not very much in posts) the other is tendingdogs, which is specific to the Tending Style of herding. There is more traffic on this list and many very knowledgable herders.
Thanks to everyone for posting. I'm going to check out those sites today and I'm sure to find what I need. The East Kootenay Stock Dog Club is presenting the Western Canadian and/or the CBCA Championships Sept. 9-11 in Cranbrook, B.C. (a measly three hour drive over only one mountain pass, what a treat! so I'm hoping to shmooze my way into their circle. I've already spoken to Penny O., a member of the EKSDC, and she would love to see a GSD participating; but I've been warned that I could be taking a lot of flack from the border collie people! Yikes!
Where are you located? I do tending/boundary with my gsd's on my flock of sheep and do lessons etc. I live in Abbotsford. It sounds like you are in the Interior? There is not an active all breed club there for herding but we do have some in the lower mainland. As far as I know I am the only one doing boundary stuff in Western Canada. Might be going to Grande Prairie in the spring to do a clinic.
I also teac/do arena herding which is easier to find help with. There is also someone in Lumby doing this. THey have border collies but have worked other breeds. Not sure how good/successful they are with the upright breeds.
There are also often seminars/workshops/clinics that are put on for the upright breed. THat might be a good choice for you to attend.
I know most of the border collie folk in the area as well, as I have worked a lot with them and my gsd's and now I have a border collie that I work/trial as well.
I live in Warfield, a village (pop. 800) located between Trail and Rossland, B.C. Lumby is approximately a 3-4 hour one way drive and Vancouver is even further at 7-8 hours. Winter/early spring driving is out of the question due to mountain passes so I have a very small window in which to take in seminars, etc. People in Cranbrook have been amazingly helpful (we kootenay girls stick together!) but unfortunately, haven't yet had the opportunity to check out the East Kootenay Stock Dog Club. Full of border collies, I've been told, but some members have expressed a keen interest in having a GSD join the flock, so to speak. So come this spring when the snow has melted and the passes are clear sailing, we'll be ready for some new adventures in sheepherding.
Thank you for responding, Shelley, I appreciate you taking the time to do so.
