Today was “Public Safety Day” at one of our local malls. I did a ½ hour K9 demo and was answering questions when I overheard a group talking in German. I asked them if they were from Germany and they said yes….. I then asked them if they did Schutzhund. The rest of the conversation went like this:
Ger: Schutzhund? Shoot?
Me: No, Schutzhund…. The dog sport.
Ger: How do you spell it?
Me: S-c-h-u-t-z-h-u-n-d.
Ger: Ahhhh!!!! Schutzhund!!!! Protection!!!
Me: Yes, Schutzhund!!
Ger: No, we don’t try the Schutzhund.

There is a shooting sport in Germany that sound very similar to schutzhund, but I believe the correct spelling for the shooting sport is schutzun. Please correct me if I am wrong. I will have to look this up again, it has been a while since I have read up on it.
