I am wondering about how everyone goes about teaching their dog a reverse heel? I have tried teaching starting with getting the dog to "back up" but seem to be running into problems. Should I start with teaching him "back" while in a heel position or standing in front of him?
You can try backing the dog up with food. If that doesn't work use a tug. Keep the tug in front of you and slowly walk into the dog. The dog shouldn't get a bite until it takes a step backwards. when the dog learns how to get rewarded, extend the amount of steps backward and start to move the tug over to the side that you want the dog to heel next too.
If you have a helper, they can walk behind you with the tug and you can focus on keeping the dog in position wih a pinch collar. as you begin to walk forward the dog will be aimed backwards focused on the tug. Make apropriate leash pops to keep the dog with you until the reward.
Pssst.......use the "search" function, we've talked about this as a "back up" command not too long ago if I remember correctly! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Will, is there any dog training topic on this board that can not be found at this point with the search feature? I assume people revisit this board to see fresh posts. Although i guess children smearing ice cream on a dogs face is fresh info.
I'm sure there are topics that we haven't discussed before, but when we discussed a topic fairly in depth within the past six months, I'll usually remind people to check the "search" function.
Also, when the same question is asked repeatedly a few times, many posters just won't take the time to type out the same reply over and over again.
While we're all here to share information, there's no reason to have to type out the exact same answers to common questions repeatedly. It's takes less time for a new user to use the "search" function than it does for experienced trainers to have to type out a reply to a common training question for the 5th or so time.
Hi Will-
I have a little problem with that search function. I have tried to use it several times with poor results. Maybe it's me? I always use the "search title and body option" and I use 1 or 2 word descriptions like; send aways, or Kohler. Not that long ago I did a search for Kohler and yeilded nothing but I have since seen plenty of articles in reference to. Am I doing something wrong?
you can set your search to look for replies/posts that is actively on today or specific the criteria like within a week/month/year or a range in between.
