I have never sedated and never will. Flying at altitude intensifies the effects of medications. That is probably the reason why so many deaths occur from this.
Most airlines and all US domestic flights will not fly animals (in cargo holds) if the temperatures (at the terminals) are higher than 85 degrees. Even tighter restrictions are placed on short muzzled dogs, ie: English bulldogs.
As you all know, we ship MANY puppies every year here at Leerburg. If you listen to the pre-recorded message while you are on hold with most airlines it states that you are not allowed to fly a pet if it has been sedated. Also, Continental has a program called Quick Pak, where the dogs are kept in a temperature controlled enviroment...even during layovers. This is one way we can 'get around' the 85 degree maximum with other airlines. It doesn't always work out because different airlines fly to and from different cities, but at least it give us more options.
I understand the airlines' reasons for not flying a sedated animal. How do they know if it's been sedated or not? If they ask, I'm sure nobody would tell the truth.
