Hi, I'm new here and new to formal obedience training. I have a 2.5 year old adopted border collie mix who is quite pushy. He was crate trained when we got him, but we never make him go in there. He likes to go in on his own though. I've decided to start crating him during the day when we're at work, and also am starting to use it as part of the groundwork program (we've made a lot of mistakes in training him and I'm sort of starting over from scratch now, just ordered Ed's DVD). My husband thinks it's "mean" and also that Spiffy's crate is too small. This is the crate we were given with him. Here is a picture:
Does it look too small to leave him in there for 8 hours at a time? He weighs about 55 pounds. He can stand up and turn around in there but not much else. Should we get a bigger crate if we're going to start crating him more? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
really hard to say bt the general rule is that that the dog should be able to stand and turn around thats it.
dogs are not humans and dont need a lot of space to be comfortable. they actually seem to prefer smaller places.
we have a 100 lb gsd that his favorite place to rest is under my sons crib. (picture a place so small you can't imagine a gsd fitting and he does) so it looks about right and tell your husband to behave or he might end up in a crate <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I'm new to this too. What is the general purpose of crate training? I work out of the house from 7 to 7, when do I create my dog? At night? Sleep time? I'm in need of knowledge, can anyone provide this novice with some guidlines. Thanks so much. Emilio
