I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place or not, but I came across this breeder's site when looking at the Oma's Pride distributor list and wondered what you all could tell me about their dogs based on Pedigrees, since I have no knowledge of such things.

Well, except for Blacky, the rest are showline gsd from German bloodlines. The showlines are pretty nice, especially the lines from the bitch who has some pretty nice dogs in her pedigree like Jango and Jeck. Ive seen some nice dogs with Jango and Jeck in them, i found that they have a bit more character than other showdogs. (always been a Jeck von Noricum fan , in the old days ofcourse! lol ) Plus vom Kirschental is quite a well respected breeder. Are you thinking of getting a pup?

As for the male, he is not too bad either, if you are looking for german showlines than one should put it on Zamb von der Weinerau or Jeck vom Noricum, both have had a great impact on the breed, they are both out of the famous Odin von Tannemeise, a dutch bred dog. hope this is a bit helpfull to you

Yes, we've been thinking of getting a GSD for some time now (years, actually), but we're waiting until we know we're ready to handle a 2-dog household (having the time, energy, and money) before we make any final decisions. We want the dog for personal protection and/or being Adam's Police dog should he get a postition to where he could be a K9 Handler, so I'd prefer an older dog that's already had some foundation training for bitework and such, as opposed to getting a puppy, because my husband and I have no idea how to prepare a puppy, and I wouldn't trust myself to do things right even with all of Ed's DVD's. We can learn how to work with a dog that already has some concept of what to do, though. lol
I'd love to get a Leerburg dog, but they've already told me that they don't think they can supply me with the type of dog I'm wanting (one that has some kind of training already). I'm still open, though. The only reason I came across this person's site is because they are also a dealer of Oma's Pride raw diets, and I was looking into that yesterday. They seem a little high on some of their prices, though, so I don't know if I'll bother with Oma's Pride or not. I still have to do some shopping around to compare prices from the grocery stores first.

The price on OMA's that they list is right on target with what other distributors are selling it for. I have only fed it in small amounts because of the price per pound.
If you are serious about wanting a dog for him to work and PP you would be much better served to be looking away from showlines. Sure, there is a chance of getting one that will work, but there is just as much chance of getting a show dog out of a working litter. Not much.
I think in your situation you would be better served to be looking at dogs in the 12-18 month range anyway. At that point you can see all that you need to see from both a drive and soundness perspective.

Kristen.
If you're looking for personal protection and/or a patrol dog for your husband, you want a working line dog, not a showline dog.

I would 2nd that opinion - these lines would not be good for either ppd's or Police Canines. If that is your goal, look elsewhere.

Will do. Thanks y'all. I've started a new post re: what lines would be best for me, so I'll continue to check there since I have no idea about pedigrees and all.
Oh, and I didn't mean that this particular distributor's prices were too high, I meant Oma's Pride's prices were high in general.
