I own a AKC English springer spaniel. All the books that I have read and looked at their coats are long and almost touch the ground. The one I own does not look like that at all. I never got to see the mother or father. I am just curious if there are different type of length for their coats to be?
Show dogs are shown in books, making you think your dog is supposed to look like that. There are ways of grooming so that you don't break the long hairs on the coat making it look longer. As far as genetics, if your dog comes from field dogs, I doubt you will be able to grow that much hair. It just attracts too many burs and such. Look at the field dogs for setters, not much fringe. Lastly is the age. a lot of showdogs get coat a little later on so the puppies don't have as much coat as the adults.
