I am training a Standard Schnauzer for detection drugs only. He is a puppy, 3 and 1/2 months old. He is finding marijuana. Every day we train in a diferent place, with all kind of distraction. I am aware of the risks to have a puppy working, Edd has explained a lot about that, I will keep training until he is at least a year old. But he is doing great in training. The best reward is the cloth and tug war. He plays and find towels impregnated with marijuana odor. I have doubts how to safely impregnate the towel with odor form cocaine and crack. These drugs are the great concern.
If anybody could help.
I dont have legal problems to work with real drugs to train the dog.
Place the tug in a sealed container that you keep the cocaine in, it will maintain enough odor to train the dog and is perectly safe. I've found however, if you have already trained the dog to search, detect, and respond to one odor, just place the cocaine in container the dog can not penetrate or swallow, and place the tug next to it. I've used that technique for years and have never had a problem. It takes far less trials to teach a new odor, you've already done all the hard work while teaching the dog marijuana. Good luck, I'm sure he'll do well.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
I second what he said but remember one thing. Do not put that tug back in the cocaine container with the dogs saliva on it. It will lead to a big problem. Also if you are washing the tugs, do not wash with soap, just hot water.

Be very careful in using towels with the odor impregnated on them. It works fine, just make sure you use many other items (besides towels). If you dont change up the item to be impregnated, you run a good chance of training your dog to locate towels....any towels.
You might want to check this out by placing some clean (non impregnated) towels out and running the dog on them. Always utilize many different items for your training (towels, paper, metal, wood, etc...). The idea is to make it so that the only consistant odor is the one that you are training for. Also, make sure your wearing gloves when setting the hides out.
