It is I have 2 dogs. Living in the deep south, with the hot and wet climate heartworm preventive and flea control is a must. I use heartguard and K9 Advantix year round. Then yearly rabies vacine and checkups.

Here (Western North Carolina) the rabies vaccine is good for three years, and I use Ivomec for heartworm prevention and Frontline Plus for flea/tick control.
Before I get my GSD, though, I plan on doing some research into whether the Ivomec will be safe to give to him or not.

Hmm now for SAR folks.............of course a lot of one time and recurring purchases there:
GPS, "real" radio, "family radios", camping gear out the wazoo, uniforms, liability insurance, certification classes, mapping software, emergency vet trips, gas, flashlights, batteries, more batteries, seminars, hotels, boots, snake gaiters, and replacements for the stuff lost in the woods, dog vest, life vest, lighted collars, harnesses, long lines, car fans, marine battery for car fans...........I think someone did some calcs and figured the average SAR person spends 3000-5000 per year more than they would normally spend on just having a pet.
I wish Mississippi would move to every 3 years for rabies vacine. It's still required every year. I know people who have used Ivermectin(sp)? for horses and measured it for the dogs body weight. I would rather stick to the prescribed version for dogs.
I'm sure some of the more experienced schutzhund and protection trainers can tell you. We have a lot of reccurring cost. Toys, tugs, bite sleeves, covers.
