I've lurked here for weeks and used the info for our new pup.
It's been 15 years since we've had a puppy.
Sugar is a Staff Bull Terrier.
We got her at 12 weeks old.
So far you all have answered every question I've had,
she's coming along pretty well, I did make a mistake
buying her but she's coming along despite him...
(Owner/breeder was allowing much bad behaviour, biting, jumping, piss/crap everywhere
including quarters! Man am I dumb or what? But two weeks later and she's clean in the crate!)
I realize this is a headstrong breed, and puppies are intense in general.
But one thing is bugging me.
She will rather subtly try to get a hold of the smaller kid's shirts
or shorts, right up front, and chew, then tug.
They are too small to effectively shake her and give a convincing no, so I do it for them.
Curious what she's thinking and open to any other suggestions.
Not sure if this is a breed that is prey driven or not. Does she do this when the kids are running or moving? Sounds like pretty normal puppy behavior to me. Although, you said you got her at 12 weeks and not sure how old she is now. We taught our dogs the "off" command so that when they go to touch something they shouldn't and we say the command they stay off it. Sounds like you are making sure that all activity with children is supervised which is a good thing>
Everything I've read says they have strong prey drive.
I'm sure this is just normal puppy behaviour as you suggest.
Like I said it's been a long time since we've dealt with a pup.
They are usually just standing still.
When they are awkward and don't seem to know what kind of tactile feedback to give the pup.
I think that may be provoking it to initiate action. Maybe that's stupid, I don't know.
We've had her two weeks, seems like a lot longer with all the maintenance! But I'm actually loving it.
