HEy fellow posters I have the privelage of owning my first leerburg puppy. HE is now 5 months and has begun chewing his hair off and has several bare spot now. This behaivior started around the same time as teething. I have been giving him Benedryl to help out and he is on a bland diet to help rule out allergies------- anyone have any other suggestions?????
Desperate here!!!!
After you've had your dog vetted to rule out anything else, you may want to check into a raw diet. A lot of people have started raw diets in response to allergies and other conditions which were resolved with the diet switch. Check out the natural diet section for more info and to see if it's something you'd like to try. Also, I'm not sure how "busy" you keep the pup, but bored animals have been known to take it out on themselves, something that's very common in the parrot-type birds. But definitely get the dog to the vet!
Maggie developed hot spots do to dampness. Where I live it is difficult to keep my dogs dry. I ended up shaveing around the hot spot, used a prescibed oinment and "Bitter Apple"
I have Bitter Apple. Bought it from Leerburg. My pup itiches a lot too. He has small red dots(more like red rashes) in his back(under his coat), near his anus. Should I apply the bitter apple to it? If yes, how diluted? Everytime I take him to the vet, he comes out being in great health but his bitting of himself has not stopped.
Any thoughts?
Instead of recommending applying chemicals like Frontline, I usually suggest looking to what has been going on in the dog's life at a stressful time (i.e. teething)
Vaccinations, heartworm meds and frontline can all cause skin problems... especially when given at a time when the pup's immune system is stressed from teething.
Michael's dog is on a raw diet and supplemented with kibble (which I recommend he cuts out of the dog's diet)
People are too quick to want to treat the symptom (scratching) without looking at the reasons and correcting it by boosting the dogs own system. Innapropriate diet, Drugs, chemicals and vaccines are some of the culprits in many dogs health issues but MOST vets don't even begin to address these issues.
YOu do have a point. Let me wait and see. But is Bitter Apple consider chemical like Frontline? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> I was taking about the bitter apple that I got from Leerburg in order to save my furniture during teething.
Neverthless- I am going to recheck his diet and his surroundings in detail.

To rule out everything ------- I've had one moderately allergic and two very allergic dogs (all rescues, but I don't know if that's relevant), so that springs to my mind every time something like this pops up. You and your vet might want to consider doing the blood panel to identify allergens, if the vet thinks this is allergy-like behavior and appearance.
I've said it before, I know (more than once), but the best thing I ever ended up doing for the allergic dogs I've had was identifying the allergens and then eliminating the food ones from the food and starting desensitizing injections for the 20-odd airborne ones.
