I am aquiring a new lab K9 2 year old that is supposed to already have on the job experience in Narcotics Detection and Tracking.I am starting my training as a handler, what could and should I do to ensure my K9 keeps on top of his game and what could I do to test him to ensure he IS a qualified N.D K9. I have assisted in training K9s for personal protection and patrol however for personal reasons I am trying to get away from this type of K9. I was going to wait until I completed my training to seach for a K9 partner however this one came as a surprise and the price and deal are very good since I have to purchase my K9 partner myself.
James,
I am taking for granted you are a LEO and purchasing the K-9 for your agency?
You mentioned you have had experience assisting other handlers - somewhere in your area you should have access to a qualified K-9 narcotic trainer. I would not purchase the K-9 until you are allowed to take this K-9 to a qualified trainer of your or your agency's choosing and have it properly tested. I would also asked for the K-9's training and usage reports for the trainer to look over. And then lastly - take the K-9 to a vet of your choice for an examination.
A good point about training records. If the previous owner or trainer can not supply record of training be very concerned. However, keep in mind the factual basis of the records. Have a experienced trainer give a proper evaluation done with the handling of the present handler. All hides should obviously be unknown to the handler. Test the dog on slick foors and around highway traffic, etc. Good luck and hope things work out for you.
yes I am in L/E and thanks for making me clear my mind I almost broke my rule that I preach in the general K9 business " believe none of what you hear and half of what you read " atleast until you have had time to verify it to be true. I am going to use this K9 anyway because this price is good even as a pet and who knows he may be the best partner I ever have I m just glad I didnt invest $5-6000 in him and then realize uh-oh. Ill keep you posted Thanks
