QUOTE from MITCH: how much aspirin(mg) per lb should I give? I have a 6 month old GSD at 63# with pano and a 5 1/2 yr old Doberman with begining stages of arthritus. END
Per pound is not the only criteria for aspirin therapy. Kristen gave you good advice: Ask the vet. NSAIDS (like aspirin) aren't tolerated well by every animal (or human), and your vet knows what other conditions might be present that might counterindicate their use. That said, I've used enteric-coated aspirin for a dog with advanced O.A., and it helped (I think) while we waited for the glucosamine to start working. The glucosamine (some vets prefer glucosamine with chondroitin) helped my dog A LOT. I'm trying not to jump onto my soapbox, because I understand that results vary, but my dog improved enough on glucosamine that she was able to climb stairs again within six months, after two years of inability. It helps with the pain (although probably not as quickly or as well as NSAIDS), but it also helps stop further degeneration and can even help rebuild cartilage.
