None of my dogs have ever done that except for one that I can think of. If his nails got too long, he would bite them. Are you sure your dog isn't biting because his paws itch or something like that?

I've heard of dog nail-biting...........don't remember where, though (as in scientific journal or graffiti). Yeah, if he's not wearing them down on walks or whatever, then you do want to keep them clipped. Others will know more about this, I think.....but I did inherit a rescue once whose claws were unclipped and not worn down and the quick had become much longer than normal -- so they could then never be clipped to the length that they would've been otherwise.

He seems to do it more out of boredom or self grooming than anything else, I've noticed him do this for most of the time that I've had him, its not a constant thing, I just catch him doing it on occasion, I look at his nail n it looks fine.
Our old female rottie kept her nails trimmed by gnawing on them. She could keep the whole house awake when she did this at night. Our vet thought it was a good thing she did her own nails as she would fight to her death before she would let anyone fool with her feet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />.
