Just tell your boss you have concerns about the guy.. tell him you noticed his performance slacken and whatever else you notice that relates to the job.. then mention to him (don't make a big deal) that your dog used to like him a lot, then one day seemed very wary about him, and since then you've been getting a bad feeling about him too. All depends on how your boss's attitude is, you know him better than any of us so you can gauge whether you should mention the dog or not, but if your dog had a change of heart this sudden, I would trust the dog's instincts on the guy and be cautious around him yourself.
He doesn’t act aggressive or scared at all, he’s just not interested in the least and doesn’t want any interaction with him.
is this dog a GSD or a different breed of dog??
and he isnt showing signs of aggression or fear then i doubt that anything was done to him by this man as you thought also
could be the way you feel about this guy and being annoyed with him being late and with this guy being late all the time he probably giving a different vibe then when he was on time all the time
also like my dogs he might just be comfortable with the guy and doesnt have to check him out any more...
i have alot of tenants that come over and the new one they like to come over and check the new people out....but the tenamt that have been here alot they just look get there scent and walk away and go lay down...
i would still check this guy out...maybe have a drug test done...if he was a drunk i am sure you could smell that on him...i would think without fear or aggression all might just be cool.....let us know what happens????
Heather – I liked this guy, he had always been very nice and professional towards me. I’ve never had any strange vibe from him before.
Diana – I did approach my boss this morning like you suggested of just saying that employee needs to be talked to since he is screwing up part of my job from his being late, and hey by the way did you notice that even the dog seems to not be so happy about his performance? I tried to make light of it so I didn’t come off paranoid. He thought it was very interesting.
David – He’s not a GSD, he’s a bullmastiff. I think that’s a great point about your dogs being comfortable with familiar people and not having to check someone out anymore.
Well, it turns out that my boss had already talked to employee the day before yesterday after work. I did ask him if he thought that maybe this guy was on drugs and he said no but he does know that for the past few weeks this guy has been drinking heavily because him and his girlfriend had just broken up. He said that’s why he had been late and hadn’t shown up 2 times. Employee was very apologetic and said he would definitely shape up (he was actually in early today). I thought too that if it was alcohol I would be able to smell it, but I’m never that physically close to anyone I work with and I’m not in any sort of small space like a car or something so I guess not? Even if that was the problem of it being alcohol and this guy doesn’t come to work hung-over anymore, I’m still going to be very careful with my dog around him. I’m curious to see if this guy has cleaned up his act, I wonder if my dog will like him again? Too Weird.
Thanks so much for all of your replies, it has truly helped!
I just wanted to point out that if as your boss says the guy just had a bad break up he may very well be giving off a weird vibe to your dog. Just be careful not to project your suspicions on him... your dog will pick up on how you feel about this guy. Theese things can run in circles and get worse. My advice would be to believe the break up story and let things go at that, untill there is another reason to think this guys up to something. The poor guy may very well be a little depressed about the breakup be careful not to kick him while he's down.
It's good you have a little something to go on now. Breakup sounds like a reason he might drink and if he was apologetic, he hopefully will do better. You should tell him to get a dog. It will help him relax and get over the heartbreak.

Alison - That's so true. I know my dogs in the past have always taken my mind off of not so great times in my life, and can ALWAYS make me laugh.
