First I'll ask is your dog over-weight and out of shape? Answer honestly as the vast majority carry more pounds than needed. You'd be surprised how much an extra 10 pounds will drag them down.
I don't refer to them necessarily as being lazy but they can seem to be that way to folks that haven't spent time with them. They do have some quirks. Nothing wrong with playing tug if done properly.
Personally I would save those toys he really likes for training purposes. I have more balls on a string than you can shake a stick at and he will play with them, but prefers the 1.95 K-Mart squeaky ball. As Flinks pointed out at a seminar, your dog will let you know which it prefers.
Don't make the mistake of getting another dog as a buddy. It's your job as an owner to keep your dog happy and occupied. If you want another dog get another dog, just get it for the right reason(s).

I have a 5 y.o. Gold Retr. which had previously only swam & retrieved for approx. 15 minutes in the evening when it was still fairly warm & was ready to quit.
Now he is on a raw diet & his energy level will allow him to go approx. 1 hour in the same conditions.
Get a medical check-up for your dog and if that is good take him out and get him in condition - run him swim him but get him in shape. Then train him. A dog does not need a toy. Humans need toys - dogs dont. In fact dominant dogs should never have toys - they just become triggers for aggression. This thread is closed.
