I would take a yorkie any day. Easily trained to bark, nervous temperament will wake up if a gnat farts. Then I guess you just wait for mr dumas to get close enough to make a mess of. All the rest is speculation. I think Will said it, I'll say it again. If you find a dog that is reactive enough to protect you, you better really need protecting. If not the dogs gonna bite someone he isn't supposed to, or go nuts 'cause he is not getting worked.
My strong belief is that PPDs (dogs that WILL bite) in the private sector, overwhelmingly, are not necessary. Mission accomplished if the alerts are loud and timely. The vast majority of occasions, those alerts are disuasion enough. Dogs...in general...don't bite, nor defend...they prevent.
One important exception: homes that work dogs; that live and breathe for k9 sports and competitions...and know what they're doing.
PPDs, against an organized attack, and most opportunistic ones, provide a FALSE SENSE of security as per Jeff's words...beyond the alert.
I think the bottom line is most company’s prey off of the weak and uninformed. They OVER price their dogs and put up a flashy web site and sell maybe 5 dogs a year but 5 dogs at 30k is not a bad living so they stay in it and the next thing you know they are force feeding there propaganda on the rest of us giving the unaware the feeling they are going to die if they don’t buy a dog from them. We have a guy like this in Aikin SC he is the same way. If you go to http://www.robbreport.com you will see all kinds of these people. They are not in the business for the dog they are in it for the money period. And you have guys like Will and I doing the right thing getting screwed. It is human nature to think that the more expensive something is the better it must be. If you really look at these site all they are selling are titled dogs they have bought from Europe claiming they have done some “high speed training” with the dog and sending out. These are also the people that invented the “executive protection I, II, and III” titles. Made up crap to make it look like the dog is something. Most of these dogs would be ran off the field in a ASR, PSA or K-9 Dog Sport trial, and I don’t even want to get in to real situations. I think it is well covered here that this FAD is a mockery of dog training and dog trainers. These people are *dog traders* not dog trainers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
When people get scared they call the police..When the police get scared they call K-9!
And you have guys like Will and I doing the right thing getting screwed.
I won't pretend to know the dog business, but it seems to me that you're selling yourself short. There is a world of people out there who would benefit from having the right kind of PPD - people that would never want to have the type of aggressive dog that these guys are advertising. They have the advantage in that they're selling magic dogs, but if 90% of the potential clients just need a dog that will alert and put on a good show, then I'd think people like you, Will, Ed, etc. would have a ready market. The truth is that I've never visited a website that tried to market a protection dog to the average Joe in this way - they either sell Rin Tin Tin, or they're selling Training with dogs on the side.
Like Jeff I do not pretend to know personal protection dogs, although i can safely say I would never spend 75k on a dog. What I am hearing, and feel free to correct me if I am wrong is that a good personal protection dog is slightly on the unstable side ready to pounce on just about anyone and anything.
If that is true what good is a ppd. I mean lets say a workman comes over who is not really a workman but a bad guy ready to do you harm. The ppd dog that has been descibed as I understand it would be of no value since he would need to be put up in the kennel so he would not eat the workman and then when you find out the workman is really a bad guy it is to late because your dog is out back.
I always thought that a ppd would be like a good soldier or a good cop that is have a srong stable personality that would not back down when confronted and have the discretion to know the good guy from the bad.
I mean you would never put a gun in the hands of a slightly unstable man why would you teach a slightly unstable dog pp.
Anyway lassie just came on so I better cut this short.
It is not selling your self short or anything like that. I guess what I was trying to say in my rant is that People that understand dogs and drives and sell GOOD PPD sell then for a heck of alot less then $30K And then you have the other side that see the dollar signs in everything and take advantage of the consumer and ripe them off. No don't get me wrong some of the dogs may be good but $30K for a dog come on that is a rip off.
As for the PPD I would say this Trent. A good one is stable and can be around people with out a problem. I like to call it the light switch. You can turn them on and off. This is a good one. One that has a nice balance of drives and stability with out this you are looking fro trouble.
