Late saturday evening New Smyrna, Florida Police Department K9 handler Roy Nelson, and his K9 partner were killed in a traffic crash while responding to a burglary call. While enroute to the call, a white ford truck pulled out in front of Officer Nelson where he attempted to avoid a crash. Ofc. Nelson's patrol car struck a gaurdrail and flipped, killing him and his dog. The truck responsible for the crash fled the scene.
Ofc. Nelson is the first police officer to be killed in the line of duty for the city of New Smyrna. My condolences go out to his family, friends and co-workers.
Words can't even begin to describe our sympathy for the family and the department. We too suffered our firt fatality in 2004 and nothing will ever be the same at the department or for his family. May he keep watch over all now that his final 10-42 is done.
I come from a long line of cops and am in the process of becoming one myself. I appreciate the call to duty and the courage of those who answer it. We, as handlers, trainers, and pet owners should at least be able to find some small measure of comfort knowing that these two brothers crossed the rainbow bridge, unafraid, with a dear friend by their side.
It is my beleif that duty is what motivates a police office but honor and inner strength are what drive them to choose such a dangerous career; awarding them the responsibility to protect those of us who cannot protect ourselves.
In appreciation for your sacrifice, THANK YOU Officer Roy Nelson!!
