Hello all!
My first GSD is now 12 weeks old. Great dog. Anyhow, I've noticed he makes "eye boogers" like nobody's business. What's the story behind these things? What are they (dust, allergies, etc)? Is there a way to prevent them (dietary, etc)? Are they just a summer-thing or a year round thing? They are harmless, right...just wipe them down and move on with my life?
Anyway, that's it...thanks in advance for all responses.
Jon
These can be an indicator of a lot of things... eye infection, or allergies either enviromental or food.
Some dogs when running a fever get them or they can be an actual physical irritation of the eye (i.e. entropian or ectropian). sometimes part of the eyelid rubs on the eye and causes the "booger"
I would start with a visit to the vet, to rule out medical issues.
My dog's had these ever since I got him at 4 months (15 months now), never thought twice about em, in the mornings after he wakes up they're all goopey n he wipes em off either by walking alongside my bed (ick) or he'll paw them off (looks cute too lol). During the day he develops them but they turn hard n fall off pretty quick.
Maybe I should have him checked out by the vet too.
The same thing with my GSD puppy. He is now 6 and 1/2 months old and he had them since I had him at 11 weeks old.
Every morning I wipe them off of him. Sometimes he has more and sometimes less but does not seem to have any effect on his overall daily activity. I think when he was younger he used to have more and now I am seeing less each day. Maybe it had to do with vacinations?
My 10 month old still has them in the morning. They did seem to be worse when he was younger. At the beginning of spring one of his eyes would tear up quite a bit, I think it was from allergies. I don't think the boogers are anything to worry about though.
While "eye boogers" can be caused by minor things, it can also be the first sign you will see in some chronic eye conditions that require medication (like pannus or KCS) a vet check just to see is a a good idea.
