My 7 month-old GSD has recently developed lameness in the right, front leg, with a pronounced curvature of the neck, and a generally unstable gait. A veterinary orthopedic surgeon performed a myelogram, testing of joint fluids, blood work, and associated x-rays, all of which indicated no abnormalities, and ruled out panosteitis. She was put on Rimadyl for pain, and a 7-day course of Clavamox (Augmentin) in case of bacterial infection. She was referred to an internist, who feels the problem may be a pinched cervical nerve, and has ordered blood work to measure muscle enzymes, and has started her on muscle relaxers. The vet feels acupuncture and/or a chiropractor may be helpful in the future. The next test would be a CT scan. Has anyone encountered a similar problem in their puppy (or dog of any age)? I would greatly appreciate your input. Note to Ed: Thank you for your prompt reply to my recent e-mail regarding the above.
I had a dog with a ruptured disc and I did acupuncture on her and I highly recommend you stick with both chiropractic work and acupuncture. I drove to Chicago once a week to get her worked on. I think regular visits of these two methods could help your dog a lot with any problems theog may be experiencing. Good luck keep us posted.
Karmen:
Thank you for your recent note. I took my dog to the University of Illinois Veterinary College for an MRI and additional evaluations. She was diagnosed with Focal Dystonia of the neck muscles. The translation is that the neck muscle remains in spasm and cannot be relaxed, which in turn affects the shoulder and leg muscles on the right side. This is apparently a very rare condition, with none of the consulting vets ever having encountered such a problem, but they know of similar cases in humans, and the condition seems to occur during adolescence. We are attempting to relieve some of the spasms with steroids and valium, however, the prognosis is not very encouraging. Thanks again for your concern.
