I currently own a 1 year old registered Sheltie male who has not been neutered. He has an excellent pedigree with champions on both sides and is in excellent health. I have heard that you should neuter your dog so that he does not get testicle cancer at an older age. Is this true??
My parents had a kennel where they raised German Shepards and Akitas for over 20 years. I have never seen a dog who has gotten this type of cancer. It is my belief that a dog's risk to this type of cancer is brought on in part by his breeding. As I said my dog has an excellent pedigree, even a Westminster winner 2 generations back!!
Another reason people neuter is due to "over-population". My dog is not a threat to the "over-population" of the dog world since he never is let loose. He is a little bit hyper, but I have heard that neutering may not necessarily calm a dog down.
I really would appreciate some advice on this issue. Thank you for your help!!
The risk of testicular cancer is not there for dogs with both testicles down. If a dog has one testicle that has not dropped that that dog must be neutered because the risk of cancer is signitficant (by the age of 5 or 6). But if both testicles are down this is a non-issue.
One thing that people do need to consider is the fact that neutering a dog almost eliminates prostrate problems in dogs. This can add years to your dogs life. In fact I even recommend neutering an older dog (6 to 9 years old) for this very reason.
The bottom line is that you probably do not have a stud dog. The odds of your dog being breed worthy is small.
