I am brand new at training and just discovered this site. Here is some background on our dogs. Dylan, a 7 yr. old Standard Schnauzer with basic commands "sit, heel, down" as a puppy was to be in conformation trials, however, he ended up being 1" inch over standard. Formal training stopped and he has been my partners house dog for 6 years. Hence, he listens when he feels like it- oh yes, he was trained with the "Yank and Crank" method. I have only been a member of the pack family for 6 months.
We just acquired a rescued 14 month old Doberman named Elkie, from a breeder 1 week ago. At that time we decided to train both dogs for obedience trials and the Doberman possibly for Schutzhund if her genes and temperament are right. She was severely malnourished as a puppy and we think she has had a protein deficiency which may or may not have long term effects. We both have no experience with this. My partner has had three Rottwielers in the past. Two she lost to euphenasia - and one she sold when it received Championship status.
I hope enough background is here! Both dogs are now crated and we are starting a two week "Good Outside" routine. Back to the basics I guess - based on my research from this site.
Now the question: She wants to train the Doberman and I have the task of training the Schnauzer. The question lies in Rank Order and two pack leaders? Are we erring again? Should there only be one trainer/pack leader in the home? I presume you can see our dilemna and understand where my thinking is headed. We have ordered the DVD and will be staying close to this site as my training proceeds at a slow pace.
