Yup, they sure can be. You'd think not, since the air/sunlight are always getting in there, but . . . it's often sparked by allergies, the irritation creates a wonderful breeding ground for bacteria.
You may want to keep her ears clean, clean, clean and deal w/the allergy underlying the infections. It may not be a matter of the infection returning so much as it not ever really resolving in the first place and flaring back up.
Well the vet prescribed "Gent-L-Clens" which was the liquid we did twice daily. And "Otomax" which is a creamy liquid, used 1X daily. Both only available by vet prescription but worked very well for her particular problem.
We try and clean it once a week, she's gotten pretty touchy about here ears since this last infection. We're working her up to letting us handle the ears again without laying them flat so we can't put anything in them.
Yes, pls do have the vet treat the ear infections. Dogs suffer terribly and I've seen some very bizarre behavior changes brought on by undiagnosed ear infection.
New England Serum sells a product called Veterinarians Best ear wash - this is an excellent product - use this ever day on bad cases. There are options for medications. Everything from Otomax (which is very good) to Panalog or Colloidal Silver.
Take a very close look at your dogs diet. This is often food relates. If your dog has a yeast problem you need to deal with this in the diet - i.e. no dairy products, no sugar, no grains ect. You would want to go read my article on All-natural diets on my web site.
D not let ear infections get away from you. I saw one dog that had to be put to sleep because the people did not take care of the ears.
