An invisible fence has buried wire. If it has to go across a driveway, they cut a small groove in the pavement, lay the wire, and fill it in with tar or some rubber sealant stuff. An electric fence has the wire above the ground, and operates in the same way that an electric fence keeps livestock in. If the dog touches the wire, he gets shocked.

Quick update on Malik quite a while later: he's doing great, we're back on the regular prongs, he's very aware of the fence but doesn't "hug" the house walls, and in fact, yesterday, he bolted through to go play with a puppy! Fact is, we have the zap on the lowest setting, and the short prongs on the collar, which might not do much due to his fur. So we just switched to the long prongs, and increased slightly the zap level. I would say that Malik is now well adjusted to that fence <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
