My 15yr old pomeranian is coughing. It sounds like a fur ball hack. I have been trying to find a vet who can help me. I have tried within reason different medications. Prednizone being one, but I hear it can cause cushings disease. He has had many blood tests for the obvious causes and yet nothing, no kennel cough. He has had xrays. Nothing showing in them as to the cause. He has lived in 3 states with different climates. AZ, CA and now OR. I would like to give him comfort as it wakes him from sound sleeps and he can look very tired after bad bouts and I want him to be well.
I've owned Francis for 4yrs, going on 5 now. He is 15yrs old according to papers. I neutered him soon after I got him due to an inflamed prostrate. He was not in good shape at the time, both he and his sister Lucia were left at a kennel, filthy and just not looked after. Most of his teeth were extracted within months of my owning him. The vet said that they had to be removed. Infact it wasn't a pleasant experiance as they thought I had always been his owner.
3mths after owning Francis. The first vet in the mountains of AZ thought it might be from the kennel when his cough started. Ran blood test for kennel cough, nothing there.
8mths after owning Francis. The second vet in phoenix thought it could be from a fungal disease or said that it was perhaps a collapsing trachea, but the xrays showed no signs of this nor the blood test for the fungal/mold melody (sorry really can't remember the term for it right now). I took him to her 3 times as we really did want to get to the bottom of it all. He was on antibiotics for two weeks. She also gave me tussigon to relax him thinking it might be bought about thorugh over excitement.
3 1/2yrs.The third vet in Oregon ran tests but still is dumbfounded. Gave prednizone see if any effect on cough, but am not willing to do this as may cause cushings am told. The xrays after 2yrs are showing nothing wrong with his trachea or lungs or anything wrong with normal blood test levels.
I am frustrated. I don't have the documentation with me right now for each suspected cause.
I thought I would ask this page in the hopes that someone who may own a pom could tell me if they are prone to anything like this and if so what do I do. I have now stopped taking Francis to the vet as we seem to have run out of options right now. Hope this information can help
You really need to find a vet you can work with. It would be patently irresponsible for anyone to attempt to give you a medical diagnosis via keyboard. There are some crappy vets in the world, no question. But there are some excellent ones as well. Are you in CA?
