Maybe a dumb question --- but with a new dog its good to use a crate. Well, on some days my wife works, and so do I.....so it could be several hours crate time for the pup. Is this too much? (Ive never used crates before, and never had two dogs at once before. But am about to get a Czech bred GSD --- so I am trying to think of all questions).
Hey John-
I moved this to House Breaking Dogs under Puppy Corner....It fit better than Raising Multiple Dogs in the same Household
Anyways Ed has a good article on housebreaking/crate training at http://www.leerburg.com/housebrk.htm
if you hadnt seen it yet.
I have left my Justice in his crate at 8 hours at a time as an 8 week old pup and had no problems/accidents. I could not help it at times due to my work schedule at the time. I did have a buddy help out when he could and stop by and take him out for me if I was stuck on overtime....but all he did was take him out then back in...no interaction other than that.
Well my working dogs must be severely abused going off your equation LOL! They live in their crates from day one. They come out to potty, walk and work... then they are back in it! Only once they are older do I rotate kennel run time.
My dogs scoff at your measly hours.
How long do you keep your dogs in crates? For the regular 'house pet', puppies need to get out and socialized and see the world. Something they can't do if they're stuck in a crate all day.
I love the crate...its helped me a lot with housebreaking my dogs. Its a great 'escape' that they know they can go to if the need ever arised, as well.
But overuse of the crate is never a good thing for someone who wants a well-socialized, well-adjusted dog.
Sarah, i own 3 gsds, and the two adults lived in thier crates unless we were interacting, it took about 2 yrs. for them to learn to have reliable manners in the house, but they spent most of the time in the crate,(out of the crate 6hrs. a day) and they're both social, and the puppie will turn out the same way, he likes his crate, i don't think i overuse it,
