My puppy will be coming into heat sometime early spring. I live in a subdivision and would like any advice for containment and protection from stray males. at present I have a kennel inside a fenced in yard. My plan is to keep her kennel locked. lock up the back yard and keep my other two spay/nueter GSDs loose back there to raise hell when some cur shows up. and one other question. Do the females become more difficult to handle when they get into season?
We had to suffer through 3 heat cycles before my husband would agree to have our CeeCee (female minpin-pet, never intended to have puppies) spayed (he just didn't want his little girl to have surgery). No, she was not harder to handle, BUT, she wanted to get bred. We had an extremely large un-neutered Rott/Chow/?StBernard male at that time (Duke, my gentle giant). He would go crazy, literally foam at the mouth trying to get into the fence where CeeCee was. She would back up to the fence and brace herself and try her best to help him breed her. ({As if}100+ pound male and 6 pound female). Anyhow, your female will probably try to get out, so, in that way, she may be a little hard to handle, but our girl showed no excess agression or anything of that sort.
