I'm posting this for a friend.
is 5 months (6 on the 29th) and I can't take him for a walk. Period. He barks at everything that moves, pulls like you wouldn't believ, tries to chase children who run past. It's a nightmare. People make comments to me about my "dangerous" dog, my arms ache from trying to control him, and my head hurts from the stress.
Any suggestions? We're working on the barking in schutzhund, and he does stop if he's told not to bark, but I'd like him to stop barking period (am I hoping for too much). I know he's too young for any sort of correctional collar/device for walking. We have NOTHING but kids and other dogs around here, so those distractions are around all of the time (so there's no "good" time to walk him). He really does need to learn to walk nicely!
I guess I just wanted to vent more than anything. I tried to let him walk with us to get my son from school (about 5 minutes) and all he managed to do was rip my arm in 15 different directions, scare school children, and get me lots of dirty looks from other parents.
It's not really his behavior that bugs me so much as the fact that I can never find a suitable place to work on walking with him. We also can no longer train him near our house because people have taken to throwing bones, broken glass, and other dangerous trash into the open field, and he gets so distracted with those things (and hurt) that it's not possible.
I know he's a puppy and he's going to get distracted...I just wish I had some way of workign with him without those things (my aching neck and shoulder would be very appreiciative).
All he works on in schutzhund classes is obedience at the moment. The dog must title in obedience before he's allowed to pursue the protection phase of his training. He has good obedience, he's just super ancy still. And it doesn't help when you live in a seriously busy neighborhood with kids running to and fro, people yelling, and trash all over the darn place (my neighbors aren't the cleanest folk I'm afraid).
Our helpers have told us NO prong collars or halter leads [i >Someone told her to use a head halter
What would you all tell her?

teach him to heel with food first,i dont think hes to young for a prong either i used one on my dog at around 5 months i cant speak for every dog but my dog doesnt think it is fun at all pulling with a prong on.nip it in the bud
ohh ya i also forgot do have any open places for him to run around? i have a giant schnauzer and boy do they have alot of energy! i usually run the snot out of him playing fetch and all that to drain all the energy ,try that also you would be surprised at how pleasnt your dog can be when they are dead tired!
Use a prong! Simple as that. He will be correcting himself when he pulls and lunges. Have her go out walking with him and change directions constantly....he will learn to not pull and that he has to pay attention to her to a degree. I would also word associate a term like "far enough" before he hits the end of the lead. Use alot of praise.
Prong is fine when used like this....unless he is dog aggressive I would suggest a different method but she didnt mention that he is.
He is not too young for a prong used in this way.

I didn't think he was too young to put a prong on him for the pulling either. That's basically what I told her to do, Patrick.
She is a military wife, living in base housing in Germany. I don't think there's anyplace she can just let him run, and she said the field they used to work in is turning into a garbage dump so that place is out now too.

why doesn't she just wait until the obedience catches up? Eventually it will be good enough to take him for that walk. There is no reason to take him for that walk right now.

Jeff, good point, but I *think* the walks are his daily exercise at the moment. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's the case. I will put that suggestion out there for her though.
