Hello to all on the forum. I'm new to the site and hope to meet a few friends and learn more about Schutzhund. I'm very interested in learing how to train a working dog after I buy and study the Leerburg videos. Any tips and starters are welcome from some of you experienced trainers =)
The biggest tip any of us here can give is for you to hook up with a good SchH club. That's where you'll go most of your learning regarding SchH training.
thx Will ... the closest SchH club to me is Houston which is about a three hour drive from me. i hear it's very difficult to become a member and you need to be very active and dedicated to be accepted. not sure how active and dedicated i could possibly be considering how far away i live =( i was hoping to learn as much at home from watching videos and reading as i could. then maybe purchasing a dog from a good bloodline.
Caleb,
You can learn a lot from video's ( some folks learn well from them, some don't )and we've discussed the order in which to watch the Bernhard Flinks series ( and others ) so that you'll get the most out of them.
With the proper use of a good harness and back tie, you can even do much of your own bite work without a helper to develop your dog's grip, as shown in:
Preparing Your Dog for the Helper "The Foundation of Grip Training" with Bernhard Flinks, video #310-D http://www.leerburg.com/310.htm
Good luck! And use the "search" function freely, it'll save you a lot of time and put the old posts at your finger tips for use.
Caleb,
You're kinda out of luck...Beaumont is part of the SOUTH CENTRAL REGION for USA; the closest USA club to you is indeed Houston, then Denham Sprgs (Baton Rouge area) or New Orleans.
You are located in the SOUTHWESTERN Reg 6 for the WDA; the closest WDA club to you is Snook (College Station area), then S. Dallas, or Austin.
Will,
I tried using the search feature to find the post where you guys discussed which order to watch the tapes in and didn't have any luck. I hope to get a few of the tapes for my birthday and would love some advice on which ones to buy first. Remember that I don't have a dog yet (except for my wife's spoiled GS in the photo) and I would like to start from the ground up. Later on I plan on looking for a dog but would like to watch a few of the tapes to gain some knowledge and confidence before attempting to train.
