Please Help Me. This is my first post. I have an 11 week old GSD, who whines non-stop when she is in her crate. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She is in her crate nearly 12 hours a day. This is because both my wife and I work. The pup is taken out to potty regularly while in her crate. However, when she is put back in her crate, she whines incessantly. I have tried putting treats in her crate with her, kongs with yummy fillings, etc. However, she quickly becomes bored with the food and starts crying. I've exposed her to didferent settings while in her crate. I've crated her next to our other shepherd in a crate, in her crate in a room by herself, in her crate in the center of our home to see us coming and going. Nothing works. Any suggestions would be great. I'm at my wits end....Andrew
12 hours may be too long for such a young dog who may have tons of energy to burn. When either of you get home from work, do you engage her in intensive activities for the rest of the night? Remember, she's been in there 12 hours, and when you get home tired, all she wants to do is play for hours, and rightfully so. In the morning before work, how do you exercise her? Best suggestion would be to work out one of you coming home midday for lunch, let her out and play with her intensely. Do a forum search for more info on crating; you'll find pages! Good luck
Thanks for the advice. I have recently bought two baby gates to block off the kitchen and living room. Having the pup free in these rooms with me have helped a lot with her whining. She objects less when it is time to go into her crate. thnks again
12 hours is way too much for an eleven week old pup (even for an adult dog). Four hours, actually, should be the max. I'm not sure what you plan on using this pup for (family pet?), but would it be possible to hire someone to walk your pup mid-day for at least an hour out of the crate?
I completely ignore a dog/puppy when it is in a crate, as if it did not exist. If I must look at the dog/puppy to check on it, I make sure it doesn't know I am looking at it. I have no idea if this information will help you, but I know many people make the mistake of trying to console a puppy whining in its crate.
Lisa is right. You have to ignore this behaviour. Anything else will reward that behaviour. It will go away if u are consistant. 12 hours straight is too long for an 8 week old to be in a crate without being brought out.
There are alot of posts on this type of topic. Utilize the search function to find them. Ed also has a good article on housebreaking and crate training.
