Maybe we could start a movement towards updating our profiles to include our experience. I just updated my profile. Even Ed has a blank profile and someone new to the board may totally disregard his posts not realizing his words are worth their weight in gold... since he tends to be very short and sweet… (With a twist of lemon).
It's just a thought. I know it would help me alot.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”
whew! long thread!
I had a little girl run up and hug my dog's neck, her Mom and I had a long look into one another's eyes, as if to thank fate for him being a therapy dog, who has folks petting them while thinking of their own past pets, now in the nursing home. I never did any bitework with him, and at that moment was glad for that. Did I believe he'd respond to a threat without ppd training? Absolutely. Luckily for both of us, it was never tested. Now had he been thru ppd training,I couldn't guess if the outcome might have been different,I would hope not. But I had zero time to respond and at the moment, "play nice" was all I could say.
I would agree all the moderators here as well as Ed are
very knowledgeable, and I learn something most everyday
I visit, and to have this place which is so well populated
with K9 pros is just awesome.
I have all kind of info in my profile, shouldn't I?
what happened that emptied profiles?
Quote:You think? I need to go back and re-read 90% of this forum again, because I obviously misunderstood all of the "stuff" dogs are born with and either have or don't. With that logic, one could just as easily take the same puppy from any given litter and create either a therapy dog or a PPD.
It isn't like there are all these MONSTER dogs out there. Your training dictates a great deal of how the non monster dogs behave. In my experience, most people really overestimate what their dogs capabilitys are. I know dogs that look great on the sleeve, but show their true colors on the bite suit. These "non monster" dogs could definately be therapy dogs if raised to do so from puppyhood. It is easy to squash biting in these dogs. Besides, a therapy dog walks around and gets petted. A dog with good nerves can do this in his sleep. Guess what? a lot of working dogs have good nerve.
As far as not knowing what people will do, I find it just as easy to read them as I do dogs. I doubt that I will find an overwhelming need to have a PPD in petsmart, or most of the places I hear about all these disasters occuring. Most people are sheep. You just need to read them and move them in the correct direction.

No biggie. Used to have optional email addresses in the profile and someone was sending rude emails. Some members decided to limit their profile info at that point, but then Ed Frawley posted his opinion and intentions regarding such behavior (as well as removing people's email addresses from their profiles), and it was over with. I, for one, had just never gotten around to putting my info back until this thread came up, and now I've put back some of it.
That's another thing that makes this forum much better than average, IMO: Anonymity on other forums sometimes tempts certain kinds of people to let loose their darker sides.

I don't like people touching my dog, I don't have a philosophical reason for it.
I don't go to Babys-R-Us and pinch every babies cheeks in the store and go "awwww hes so cute! can I give him some candy?" do I?. I think I'd get arrested if I did!
