Has anyone ever experienced a dog with cholesterol deposits on their eyes. I have a dog that has this. The vet said that it will never go away and that it is NOT affecting his vision at this time. He is not fat. I know you don't have to be to have high Cholesterol but what would be causing this? He is currently on Royal Canin Natural Blend. His half brother is on the same diet with no problems.
Oooops! Forgot to mention the cause as I understand it.
It is caused by small capillaries (blood vessels) in the eye that the larger cholesterol cells get caught in. So what you see is the cholesterol sitting in the capillaries. Why it happens in some dogs & not other is, as far as I know, only due to the smaller size of those vessels in the pupils of some dogs and not in others. Again, it seems just to be one of those things -- it doesn't point to any health problems as far as I was told -- and it didn't in the case of my dog.
How did they make that diagnosis? Did you have him looked at by a Veterinary opthamologist? Most vets know little about eyes.
I started noticing a dark spot on my dog eye which started on the corner of his eye and grew into the colored part of his eye. His left is doing the same thing. My vet told me that was a tumor and he would loose his eye but referred me to a opthomolgist. I paid $100.00 just to see him but found out that those dark spots are actually iris cells that were deposited on the surface of the cornea which is congenital. The only thing he found odd was that it is getting bigger so we will continue to monitor his eyes. It's weird to look at. But if you have any doubts about your vet or want a second opinion, I would see a certified vet opthomologist.
Thanks for the advice. The vet I went to was going to discuss my dog with her husband who is a vet and eye specialist. I am still waiting to hear the results of the blood test and her conversation with her husband.
