Travis get a slap rag (leather rag Ed sells them) or a bite pillow. The toy you are using might be to big for him to bite down on when he has it in the back of his mouth. Of just use a towel. I wouldn't be so concerned with the slipping off as I would be with the fullness and the countering. Once be bites the "toy" on the back up slip it and let him have it on the inital entry. THEN gather him back up and work the grip. On the back up you are not teaching grip you are teaching target and bite placement the grip is taught on the ground or back tie at this age. What you do now will effect how he is later so make sure it is right.
When people get scared they call the police..When the police get scared they call K-9!
The leather chamois at the hardware store work good too. He can grip it like a rag but he has to learn to bite harder to keep his grip because it is so slick. I had great success with it on a 6 month pup I had for a short time. Some dogs take more time to transition to different bite materials.
Travis,
While undergoing bite develpment (IMO) I don't recommend the leather or the firehose type tugs, they don't promote good bite develpment which it sounds like your pup still needs. Once he is biting great on something like linen or jute tugs then I would start introducing different materials, but the leather tugs get extremely slick, and while it will make him have to bite down harder, dogs still undergoing bite develpment tend to grip the leather tugs right behind the front k9's very frontal, and you want the dog gripping the tug with the back teeth (atleast I do). Just some things to consider.
he does seem to bite well on other surfaces or materials, and that is one reason why i switched him to the leather tug, i am going to go back to linen and have a helper do the agitation and take the bite, we will see what happens.
