If we get the dogs at 18 months to 2 years old, we try to work them for 5-7 years if they are still healthy. Our agency has a contract with each handler to pro-rate the cost of the dog over a five year period if the handler wants to purchase him before, and up to that limit if the handler decides to leave the unit. It is the handler's discretion on when to retire the dog after the five year term (unless the PD needs to retire him earlier). Roscoe was 3 when I got him. He'll be over 8 by the time the new dog is ready for the road. I feel it is my responsibility to let him retire in somewhat of a fair physical condition because he deserves it. This is not to say he will waste away at home. He will continue to be trained as a PPD to be mainly handled by my wife while I am away for protection of family and home. I am looking to possibly breed him as well.
My last PSD worked the road for 4 years before breaking his leg in training. He never fully recoverd so he had to be retired. He was only 5 1/2 at the time and it was such a waste. Roscoe has issues with his teeth and after spending more on dental work than the price of the dog, the city wants to retire him when its time.
