Hello,
During the weekend my puppy was bitten by a full grown Husky in the face. The vet checked him out and said the wound would be fine and prescribed antibotics for the infection. He is a 12week GSD, I have the intention of doing schutzhund with him. My concern is that this will effect his confidence and courage. Along with the ability to socalize with other dogs. Is there anything that I can do to prevent dog aggresion or anything I can do to work up his confidence?
Help me please.
It happened in front of my house, I had on a six foot leashe. I was six feet away. I knew the neighbors dog was on the leashe but had no Idea he would bust it. I feel absoulutely horrible.
It will more than likely make the pup more dog aggressive, but it also taught him a life lesson, that he won't soon forget: Not everyone is your friend, so be cautious, and be prepared to defend yourself.
The same happened to my 2yr old Rotti mix at about the same age, while playing w/an adult lab. He developed no agressive/fear/confidence issues (then or now). And was acutally looking to continue to play, the lab however became "standoffish".
I would say if he's not showing any apprehension towards other dogs then it may not become an issue. In the meanwhile be careful not to give off the wrong body signal when YOU see a bigger dog approaching.
As far as affecting his schutzhund potential, I don't have much experience in it, but good drive and how you develop it well is the key factor.
It happened to my 2 year old shepherd, she was on leash and the neighbors dog was on leash, we were introducing the dogs, their dog bit my dog right in the face, she has been aggressive on leash ever since and will not let another dog near her. I can take her off leash and she is friendly, but not on, I did not protect her, so she is ready to protect herself. I have worked and worked on it, and I am not happy it happened, and learned my lesson.
