Will, can you say that this is the reason that Ivan lost points though, because he teaches eye contact first?
There's a lot that happens in between those two things, and there are a lot of trainers that teach eye contact early who don't have problems in the transport.

There is quite a big debate about this with half the judges/competitors saying the dog should look at the helper during back transport. The other half is saying the dog has a wide angle of site and does not need to look straight at the helper. If the dog reacts properly during the back transport it must have been watching, irrespective of which way its head was. This is the clinching argument for me, doesn’t matter how you trained. I think Diegel, who lays out the current judging standard at the SV, says the dog is supposed to look back and forth between the helper and handler during the back transport and side transports.
In addition to a wide angle of sight, I would think the dog's much greater ability to detect movement would play a strong part, wether he was watching the handler or not. Just another thought.
