Hello everyone,
Today Malik cut his nail in a strange way while playing (not sure how). It's on his "thumb" and it seems that the lower part of his nail got clipped off, so a lot of the quick is showing and has bled some. He doesn't seem to mind too much, and he is not even noticing or licking. I just wonder if there is anything I can do, like clean it, or should I see the vet? It seems that the quick is quite exposed, and I don't know what to do - or not do!
Thanks ahead for your posts.
Aude
A trip to the vet is probably over kill. It's always good to have some Kwik Stop handy for that type of thing. If you don't have any, you may want to put some Antibiotic ointment on it and wrap it with gauze or something just to keep it from bleeding all over the house.
Thanks for the posts. I'm keeping an eye on it, and it seems better today, not bleeding. I think I'll just try to let it heal on its own, but I'll check often.
Aude-Noelle,
You *may* want to get some prophylactic antibiotics, especially if the quick is exposed. If an infection gets a foothold up in there, it can be very difficult to eradicate.
Is this the result of an injury, or did you simply notice the nail was missing and bleeding? There is an autoimmune related disorder which causes toenail loss. Treatment is generally fatty acid supplementation. Can't remember the name of the condition though.
It happened during play time in the snow with another dog. I have kept my eye on it, and it is now fine. Thanks for the info on the disease but I don't think that's a problem in this case.
Watch it very carefully! A patient (5 yo Dobe) at the clinic where I worked came in with a torn nail like that. His was on the second toe, IIRC. It wouldn't heal for several weeks then developed a small swelling around the nail base. Turns out it was a cancerous tumor. We removed that toe and he did just great. Just a cautionary tale to keep a close watch on something like that.
