What about doing ultrasounds as part of an annual wellness exam after age 8? I just lost my 9 year old suddenly to hemangiosarcoma, and the more I read about it, I see that with an ultrasound, we probably could've saved her life. At her August wellness exam, blood panels and urinalysis were perfectly normal and her physical exam gave no indication of disease. Yet a month later a splenic tumor ruptured and now she's gone. Hemangiosarcoma affects many mid-size to large breeds, but GSDs and goldens are particularly affected yet it's not even mentioned on the list of common diseases affecting our breed. One study I read indicated that spotting tumors early through ultrasound could offer a chance to intervene before the tumor turns malignant. Had I known, I would not have hesitated. I'm not sure why this isn't more commonly known and welcome comments from others on this board more familiar with health issues than I.
Secondly, in spite of my loss, I wish my vet would've asked me to share tissue and blood samples with those conducting research on this horrible disease. I see several institutions trying to develop either a blood test for this cancer or to identify the genetic component to either provide prediction or treatment. They ask for samples from affected dogs. It makes me so sad that my dog's death could've at least helped others but didn't. So I'm trying to spread the word. This is a silent, vicious killer that strikes quickly and is almost common in GSDs. Please don't make my mistake - be aware and ask questions about it.
