I can only speak from my own experience but my 13
year old husky bitch has always had false pregnancies after each heat. Other than the inconvenience of having your closet torn apart to make a nest and her having a real interest in making the cats into puppies( the cats were not amused) she has never had any health related problems due to her false pregnancies. After my friends
husky bitch died whelping puppies, Tally raised the 6 orphans very successfully. We bred 2 litters
from her and never a problem. I just make sure when it is time for her pseudo whelping to keep the closet doors shut!
I was just searching on http://www.google.com for this today. My female Dobermans ALL go thru false pregnancies after a season if they aren't bred. I didn't find anything that indicated false pregnancies increase the risk of pyometra but I didn't read every single article. Matter of fact, the only female I have ever had that got a pyo was a 2 year old that never had a false pregnancy........just my experience.
All of my bitches are thyroid checked by MSU and Dr. Dodds so I know in my case this is not an issue. I do believe that this runs in families as all my related females do this.
I think you are right about the inheritance thing
and false pregnancies as my old bitches daughter acts similarily after heats -gets restless and nests, but does not lactate like her mother does.
They are both very "maternal" dogs and always very good with her own puppies and any puppies in general. Tally(the old girl) would go into a kind
of post-partum depression if you tried to wean her puppies so we would let her do it herself.
Even after weaning she wanted to be in with them. Tally's mother was the same ultra-mother and lived a healthy life (ran the iditarod) and
I found out that she lived to an old age, 14 I believe. No problems so far with pyometra.
