Ed sells a great video that covers all your questions. The first steps of bite training. It covers different drives, where the handler should be and what he should/should not be doing, how much of the work you can do yourself etc. And it is all VISUAL so you don't have to try and imagine what a counter looks like.
Your right there is no set rule.
In our club there is a three mo old male that is on the sleeve and will not let go. My bitch at 8 mo. old is still on the rag but doing 300 % better than two weeks ago. So you just cant say for sure.
You should go to a club. Most will let you go with your dog for a while before you join. The trainer will work with your pup for a couple of weeks and then give you his openion of the dog. That way they dont take your money if they dont think the dog has promise.

Maybe he meant to say the 3 month old is IN the sleeve and won't come out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> My 7 month old still can't get her mouth fully around her puppy sleeve. (But grips her tug just fine!)
Sorry about that.
He is actually on the sleeve size tug. He does grab
it in the air with a full hard steady grip and does not let go. evan if pulled off his feet. He is teathing so he only gets it 2 or three times per session. And he has a great temperment.
