I need advice. My 9 month old 65lbs dobie/lab (Lucy) thinks that my friends' toy poodle (Kira-10lbs) is a chew toy. They were getting along famously for several visits. These days, Lucy runs Kira on her back and bites her legs and neck. My friends husband is very laid back and at first told me to let them work it out (pack ranking) Now we realize that Lucy doen't stop when the little dog sqeaks in pain and have squirted Lucy w/ heavily perfumed water and firm scolds before. What should I be doing to have Lucy behave around little dogs? By the way the little dog is not afraid of Lucy and enjoys playing w/ her till it gets too rough.
I would not allow your pup to play with the other one at all. There is a huge difference in size and it would be very easy for your pup to kill the poodle, even if it was accidental. I wouldn't try introducing your pup to other dogs until she is at least a year old and more solid in basic obedience. My mother has a 5lb. chihuaha and I have an 85 lb. GSD. My GSD is not allowed to play with the chihuaha at all. My dog is about 10 and she is not allowed to "play" with anyone but my son and myself. When the chihuaha is around, I keep my dog in a "down stay" if I am in the room and a crate when I am not.
At 9 months old, your dog is capable of learning rules. When she gets too rough with the poodle, catch her, put her on leash and into a down/stay. Eventually, you will be able to put her in her 'time out' by voice command only. She needs to learn that enough is enough and that she needs to listen to YOUR rules.
By perfumed water do you mean vinagar? If not this works pretty good with some dogs. Plus you can adjust the amount of vinagar. You could start with 25% and go up. I will tell you that my cattle dog loved vinagar, and it was not very affective as a deterrant. Very good for making my dog smell like salad.
