I built one of the RCMP houses two. With lumber and the Pick-Wick door I spent a little over $200 and probably $20 on insulation.
My problem is I don't think my dog ever uses it. I leave her outside during the day when I'm gone. Most days I leave, she's outside of it and when I come home she's still outside of it.
When I'm home and I put her outside she's never in it. I've feed her in the dog house. She has an "in" command that she knows but she comes right back out. I've even commanded her into the house and but two concrete blocks in front of the door and left her there for a few hours, so she realizes that inside the dog house is warm and dry. None of it seems to work. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.
Kevin - if your dog gets cold it will go in the dog house - one last point I needed to mentnion on the doors. I used to use 6 inch tractor belts cut to fit to cover the doors. I took two pieces of steel - drilled holes and used bolts to hold the flaps.
I now use car or truck mud flaps. They are easier to get and just cut them almost to the top and bolt them to the front of the house.
I've seen those grates at Fleet Farm . I don't know if you have those stores in Kansas . I'd check places that sell equipment for horses , cows or farm supplies . Home improvement stores may carry them also .
I went through a similar coaxing period with my dog. I was a bit perturbed that he didn't seem to appreciate this fine house I paid so much money for. I bet your dog does go in it, Kevin. He probably doesn't go in it until you leave, and he comes out the second he hears you come home. I tricked mine by using the remote start on my car, and sure enough, when he heard it, he went in, and when I shut it off, he came out.
I had the same concerns with my dog since I leave his kennel gate open at night, and he has the run of the yard then. Anytime we looked outside, he would be laying on the deck, buy the back door, rain or shine. He could care less about the weather. I soon found out he would go into his run/house as soon as we turned the lights out and went to bed.
